How to stand out in an ocean of marketers

The fastest way to swim (scientifically proven)

Have you ever watched the swimmers in the Olympics?  If so, you may have noticed that every time the swimmers start or make a turn, they stay underwater for a while before coming up and swimming on the surface.
Do you know why that is?
It was recently discovered that swimming underwater is the most efficient way to swim. Using an underwater technique known as the “dolphin kick”, swimmers can cover more water in less time with less energy.

Get this: in the 2004 Olympics, strict regulations were made limiting how long swimmers could be underwater after their starts and turns. Why?
They were remaining underwater for so long that they were knocking themselves out. Swimmers knew they could swim faster when submerged, and so they weren’t coming up for air until they went unconscious!
Now go back in time a bit further. It’s the late 1980’s. No one was using the dolphin kick at the time.
The popular method was to surface much more quickly and swim along the surface of the water. But a few people started experimenting with the dolphin kick in the late 80’s.
And it soon became clear that these people were gaining a big competitive edge. Olympic medals began going to those who had mastered the dolphin kick. Why? Some attribute the wild success of Michael Phelps (sometimes considered the greatest Olympian in the past 50 years) to his mastery of the dolphin kick.  A little technique, that helped a few swimmers stand out from the crowd and win big.

What My Friend Saw!

This past summer, my friend wanted a tree cut down in his backyard.
The tree was leaning over his house, and it was a bit too big. If a big storm came, and if the wind blew hard enough, the tree would fall and wreck the house.
So my friend called up a landscaping crew. He told them about the tree, and requested it be removed.  The landscapers were happy to land a job. My friend was happy to get rid of the tree. The day arrived. The landscapers were scheduled to come in the afternoon. My friend was out working. When he came home later that evening, to his surprise, the tree was still there. He wondered about it, and decided he would call the landscaping crew the next day. So the next day comes; my friend was fixing breakfast, and he looked out the window overlooking the front yard. Something felt off. He couldn’t put his finger on it. Then, he realized…
The landscaping guys had cut down the wrong tree.
They had cut down the big, beautiful oak tree that had made the front yard nice and shady.    OOOPS!

 

As I heard my friend recall that story, I couldn’t help but wonder… why weren’t *crystal clear* directions exchanged? So that the landscapers knew with certainty what tree they were supposed to cut down? Seems kind of important.

Recognized as one of the greatest advertisements of all time.

Ernest Shackleton was preparing for an 1800 mile journey across Antarctica. He placed the ad in a London Newspaper to recruit workhands for his trip.
Brief.  Blunt.  Says it like it is.  And it received thousands of responses.

 It seemed that everyone in England wanted to go on this “hazardous journey.”

 

That’s a well-written ad.
